Notable Downloadables

Every once in a while I run across a program or utility that's really nifty. I've started listing the best ones I find here. These programs are well worth the time it takes to get them.

ZipMagic
If you use a PC, you probably use Zip files. This utility knocks the socks off every other method I've seen for dealing with them. ZipMagic makes Zip files act like folders (or subdirectories) on your disk. The program loads as a virtual device driver and handles compression and decompression on the fly. Once it is loaded, Zip files look like folders everywhere you use them.

You can open documents directly out of a Zip file; you can run programs from inside a Zip file; you can even change directory into a Zip file from a DOS window. I didn't realize how powerful this was until I was searching for an icon one day. I expected the search to return about a dozen icons but got back nearly 400 icons. With ZipMagic, the search had automatically extended into a couple of Zip files on my hard drive with icons in them. Wow!

Dimension 4
Dimension 4 is a freeware program for synchronizing your computer's clock to a remote time server on the Internet. You can configure it to set the clock and exit or to keep your clock current by updating the time at regular intervals from a selected time server.
